Configure the home page

The WP Writer’s Block home page can display content of all types. You can:

  • Display your latest blog posts or posts of a certain kind
  • Display a static page with basic information
  • Display anything you’d like using WordPress widgets

These settings are controlled in a few places depending on what you want to display.

Just a quick note before you get started: a lot of these settings won’t look quite right until you have content in the the system. You might want to skip to the Create posts section and add a few items before you decide on a homepage layout. That said, it’s easy to come back and change this after the fact so do whatever suits you!

Use widgets to create your homepage

If you’re not familiar, widgets in WordPress are magic little boxes that let you drag-and-drop content into whatever order you’d like. The WP Writer’s Block theme uses widgets in a few different places, covered later in this guide. To use widgets on your homepage:

  1. Under Settings > Reading, for “Front page displays” select “Your latest posts” (this is the default when you install WordPress)
  2. Under Appearance > WP Writer’s Block settings > General tab, change “Home page content” to “Widgets”
  3. Now, go to Appearance > Widgets and use the “Home Widgets” section. More information about widgets is here.
  4. Once you’ve got the widgets in place, refresh your home page to make sure everything is in order

Display a static page

This method will show a single Page from your site. This is a simple way to get basic content on the home page. Depending on the plugins you have installed, this can  display all kinds of content. To enable this mode:

  1. Create and Publish a page at Pages > Add New
  2. Under Settings > Reading, for “Front page displays” select “A static page” and choose the page you’d like from the “Front page” drop-down. If you’d like a page for all of your recent posts (which can be linked in your main menu), select that from the “Posts page” drop-down
  3. Under Appearance > WP Writer’s Block settings > General tab, make sure the “Home page content” setting is on “WordPress decides” (this is the default)
  4. Refresh your home page to make sure the changes went in place

Display all current posts

This setting will show your latest posts on the homepage sorted from newest to oldest.

  1. Under Settings > Reading, for “Front page displays” select “Your latest posts”
  2. To control the number of posts displayed, change the “Blog pages show at most” number on this same settings page
  3. Under Appearance > WP Writer’s Block settings > General tab, make sure the “Home page content” setting is on “WordPress decides” (this is the default)
  4. Refresh your home page to make sure the changes went in place

Display posts of a certain format

The WP Writer’s Block theme uses post formats to create content of a few different types in the system (this is covered in-depth here). This mode will let you display only a certain format on your homepage.

  1. Under Settings > Reading, for “Front page displays” select “Your latest posts”
  2. To control the number of posts displayed, change the “Blog pages show at most” number on this same settings page
  3. Under Appearance > WP Writer’s Block settings > General tab, change “Home page content” to the post format you’d like to use and click Save changes
  4. Refresh your home page to make sure the changes went in place
